Flight Numbers & Performance

While standard Terns are known for their heavily understable -3 turn, the Champion Tern officially boasts flight numbers of 12 | 6 | -2 | 2. This distinct change means it takes a bit more power to turn over, making it significantly more reliable in headwinds and for players with faster arm speeds. You still get that legendary 6 glide to keep it airborne, but with a tighter, more controllable flight path.

12 6 -2 2

How the Champion Tern fits your game:

  • Wind-Fighting Glide: The -2 turn gives it enough stability to handle moderate headwinds without aggressively flipping over and crashing into the ground.
  • Power Hyzer-Flips: Throw it hard on a hyzer angle and it will pop up to flat, riding a dead-straight line with massive carry before its reliable fade kicks in.
  • Controlled Distance: When you need the distance of a 12-speed but can't afford a wide, sweeping S-curve that might drift out of bounds, the Champion Tern keeps things tight.

The Champion Plastic Advantage

Innova’s Champion plastic is a top-tier, translucent blend renowned for its elite durability. Because of how it cools during manufacturing, Champion plastic tends to mold up stiffer and more overstable than opaque blends like Star or Pro. For the Tern, this changes the mold so much that Innova officially adjusted the flight numbers just for this plastic. It will retain this dependable, slightly more stable flight for years without beating into a roller.

  • Star Tern: The standard premium opaque blend. Offers excellent all-weather grip and the classic -3 turn for easy S-curves.
  • Pro Tern: Provides exceptional glide and a tacky grip, breaking into a highly understable flyer much faster than premium plastics.

  • Proto Glow Tern: Innova's upgraded glow-in-the-dark plastic for highly visible night rounds (-3 turn).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Champion Tern have a -2 turn instead of -3?

Innova officially adjusts the flight numbers on the Champion Tern to reflect how the plastic molds up. Champion plastic cools stiffer and creates a slightly more overstable disc than Star, Pro, or GStar. Because it resists turning over more than the other plastics, it is rated with a tighter -2 turn.

Is the Champion Tern good for beginners?

Because it is a 12-speed driver with added stability, it is not recommended for beginners. Newer players stepping up to distance drivers will have much better luck with a Pro or Star Tern (which have the -3 turn) to help maximize their glide and distance at slower arm speeds.

How long does Champion plastic take to beat in?

Champion is Innova's most durable plastic. It will retain its out-of-the-box flight characteristics for a very long time, often taking several seasons of regular play to noticeably beat into a more understable flight. This makes it an incredible long-term investment for your bag.
