Innova DX Roc 4 | 4 | 0 | 3

The DX Roc is the version of the Roc most of us learned on, and it's still one of the best midranges you can buy. It's grippy, comfortable and inexpensive, it holds whatever angle you throw it on, and it finishes with a dependable fade. DX seasons faster than any other Roc plastic, so one disc slowly turns into a straight shooter and then a flippy hyzer-flip disc, which is why so many players cycle them. Flight Numbers

At 4 | 4 | 0 | 3, the Roc is a slow, controllable midrange. The 4 speed means you don't need a big arm to get it to fly right, and the 4 glide carries it far enough for midrange drives without floating past the basket on upshots. The 0 turn is what makes the Roc famous: it holds whatever angle you put it on instead of flipping over, even when you throw it hard. The 3 fade gives it a solid, predictable hook at the end, so you can trust where it's going to finish.

The Roc delivers:

  • Holds Any Angle: Hyzer stays hyzer, flat stays flat, and anhyzer holds before fighting back. It's the Roc's classic flight.
  • Easy Control: A slow, 4-speed disc with zero turn, so newer players can throw it right without a lot of power, and stronger players can lean on it without it flipping.
  • Changes as It Seasons: Fresh it fades hard. Worn in it flies straighter, then turns. One mold can cover three shots in your bag.

It excels at:

  • Learning clean release angles and building a dependable midrange game
  • Controlled hyzer upshots and straight midrange drives
  • Cycling: fresh Rocs for fade, seasoned Rocs for straight and turning lines

The DX Plastic Advantage

DX is Innova's baseline plastic, and it's the classic Roc feel. It has great grip at a great price, a little give in the hand, and it feels comfortable even on cold mornings. The tradeoff is durability: tree hits and rough landings leave marks, and each one makes the disc a little straighter and a little flippier. That's exactly what players want from a DX Roc. Throw a new one when you need fade, and keep your worn-in ones for straight shots and turnovers. Pick your exact disc right on this page.

How the Roc Fits in the Innova Lineup

  • Vs the Innova Star Roc: Same mold in Innova's grippy, tough premium plastic. The Star Roc keeps its fresh, fading flight for a long time and can fly a touch more stable. The DX Roc costs less and seasons much faster, so it's the better pick for cycling.
  • Vs the Innova KC Pro Roc: KC Pro is a firm, stiff blend with a dry, powdery grip. It's tougher than DX, so it holds each stage of seasoning longer, while DX gets there faster and costs less. Some Roc throwers bag both to cover different shots.
  • Vs the Innova DX Roc3: The Roc3 (5 | 4 | 0 | 3) is the faster, beadless update to the Roc, also in DX. It needs a bit more speed and gives a bit more distance. Grab the Roc for slower, more controllable approaches and the Roc3 for longer midrange drives.
  • Vs the Innova Star Mako3: The Mako3 (5 | 5 | 0 | 0) is Innova's dead-straight, neutral mid with no fade. It's a great straight-shot disc, but a fresh Roc is the one that holds up in wind and comes back at the end.
  • Vs the Discraft Buzzz: The Buzzz (5 | 4 | -1 | 1) is the other midrange everybody knows. It's a speed faster and a lot straighter at the end. The Roc has a bead, holds its angle harder and finishes with a much stronger fade, so it's the better pick when you need the disc to come back.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Innova Roc

How does the Innova DX Roc feel in the hand?

The Roc has a small bead on the bottom of the rim, a gentle dome and a blunt nose. It's 21.7 cm across and 2.0 cm tall, with a 1.3 cm rim depth and a 1.2 cm rim width, so the rim fits any size hand. DX is Innova's baseline plastic. It has a grippy, slightly soft feel with a little give, and it's comfortable right out of the box.

Can the Innova DX Roc handle wind and power?

A fresh DX Roc can. With 0 turn and 3 fade it holds its angle and fights the wind like any Roc. DX seasons quickly, though, so a well-worn DX Roc gets straighter and will turn over in a headwind. Keep a newer one, or a Star or KC Pro Roc, for windy days and power shots, and save your beat-in DX Rocs for calm days and finesse lines.

Does the Innova DX Roc break in over time?

Yes, and that's a big part of why people love it. DX is the fastest Roc plastic to season. It starts out stable with a strong fade, gets straighter after a season of tree and ground hits, and eventually becomes a slow-turning disc that's great for hyzer flips and soft anhyzers. Lots of players carry two or three DX Rocs at different stages.
